Mobile Advertising 2012 Year End Review

2012 Year End Review

2012 is over and it was a great year!   I started 2012 with a focus on mobile advertising and mobile apps.  My goal for the year was to capitalize on the growing mobile trend and solidify a strong foothold in this space.  I officially made the plunge into mobile advertising February 1, 2012.   One thing I can say about going into a new market is that is unknown to you is to be ready for challenges and curve balls to be thrown your way.

I started the year contacting individual app owners and offering them money up front to be featured in their applications.  Although this was a great idea on the surface (as this is what alot of people already do on traditional websites), I ran into a lot of problems in finding really good apps to promote on and working out a pricing model that would be acceptable (and profitable) for both myself and the developer.  Ultimately I abandoned this approach to mobile advertising and moved on to more traditional types of mobile advertising (mobile search ppc and mobile display advertising) as many of my tests resulted in me losing more money than I was making.

Things really picked up, however, when I started to create my own apps in various niches and integrating both CPA Offers and push notifications within the applications.  For the most part, about 1/2 of my profits this year were produced from this model.  Another 1/4 of my profits were produced by something called Pay Per Call.  I explained this model in an earlier post last year, but basically the jist of it revolved around getting people to dial into telephone numbers of various advertisers.  I would get paid when a person stays on the line beyond a certain predefined duration.  This duration was typically anywhere between 60 secs to 3 mins.

Some of the other major aspects of this year was my success in the ringtone market.  Ringtones used to be very popular a few year ago.  However, as more and more people started jumping on the bandwagon to promote them, the niche was saturated by people attempting to advertise them and running up bid prices in the process.  I was blessed early on in the year to find an angle that allowed me to promote them without much competition.   However, my luck ran out toward the end of the 3rd quarter last year when a lot of my competition moved in and caused my bid prices to exceed my profitability threshold.  Again, the same old story when you participate in this affiliate business.

2012 started off with its set of problems and ended the same way.  For the most part I’ve been profitable 10 out of the 12 months of the year.  However, the level of my profitability has greatly declined over the course of the year.  My most profitable month on record was June of 2012 with a PROFIT of $17,955.13, however, I ended the year in December with a profit of only $265.49 (See illustrations below).

As you can see from the illustrations, December was a “bad month” overall.  Many of my CPA offers just either failed to convert, paused due to advertiser caps, or were not profitable anymore due to new competition on my traffic sources.  It’s a little depressing, however, I will keep pressing forward as I’ve learned too much this past year to give up.  Time to go back to the wood shed and develop a better plan going forward in 2013.  Much of what made me successful in 2012 will continue to be executed in 2013, however, there is plenty of areas where I can “cut the fat” from my business model and I will be doing much of this in the new year.

But before we go forward, I would like to publish the final report for 2012.  It was a great year, a break out year for me in many aspects.  I would like to thank all the people around me that helped make this possible.  Thank God for giving me the wisdom and patience to figure so many things out.  I would like to thank my wife for putting up with all the late nights I would spend “brainstorming” and “testing out my next great idea”….she was really a trooper who put up with my many many many failures..but didn’t ever try to get me to stop.  I would like to thank my friends, both online and offline, who either kept me motivated about having my own business, gave me various market insights and suggestions, or who just were there to listen to my hair brained schemes.  Finally I would like to thank Ruck and Ryan from for all their hard work developing a community full of resources that quite frankly MADE my business this year.   Their wealth of knowledge greatly contributed to the success of my business this year.   If you’ve not checked out their forum, you are missing out on an opportunity to work with some of the most serious and hardworking guys in the industry.  You’ll also find that the members of the forum are top notch and really want you to succeed….

With all of this said….2012 was a great year and I’m looking forward to 2013 being an even better year!

Anything worth having will have the “curveballs”. Like any good analogy a curveball can be knocked at the park with hours of batting practice or in your case “brainstorming” . I wish you continued success and maybe 2013 u can promote something for me. Also thank God for a positive wife! They are truly a blessing. Good luck

Some good months, some not as good….but finishing the year 80k ahead on a side business (while holding a job and making time with family) is a major accomplishment. Awesome job!
